Chapter 6

Ryan settled deeper into the cushions of his sister’s couch and adjusted his grip on the Bible splayed open across his knee. Paired with the festive decor across the room and the steaming mug of coffee beside him, there wasn’t a better way to start a new week.

Especially in the quiet of an empty house with the kids at school, John at work, and Cheryl out running errands.

He took another sip of liquid energy, then turned his attention to the underlined passage in Ephesians about husbands loving their wives. He’d had a wonderful childhood example, watching his parents, but the challenge to love Liz as himself leaped off the page.

Before he could figure out how to make the reminder practical, his phone vibrated with a call from the main office. A moment later, the ever-efficient Valerie was on the line.

“Are you calling with more details for the Argentina trip?”

“I have two reservations yet to confirm but will send the detailed itinerary before the end of the week. However, keep in mind that the team from Production probably won’t send the final list of requested images until sometime after the first of the year.”

“Just in time for us to hop on a plane.”

“Call it airport reading material, but promise me you won’t peek at it during your honeymoon.” His boss’s secretary chuckled.

Ryan laughed with her. “Liz might kill me if I let thoughts of work interrupt our trip. Speaking of which, thanks again for pulling a few strings and landing us a five-star hotel on the beach.”

“I still wish I could come for the wedding, but with my newest grandbaby due any day now—”

“You need to be there.” Ryan took a sip of his cooling coffee. “So if this isn’t about Argentina, what can I do for you?”

“I found you another five-star deal to impress your future in-laws.”

“You did?” He pushed aside his Bible and leaned forward to rest his elbows on his knees. “I knew it was a long shot this close to Christmas—”

“True. But they just released the VIP inventory.” She quickly relayed the details and his new confirmation number, with a promise to immediately follow up via e-mail. A moment later, his phone dinged with a notification.

A quick swipe later, Ryan stared at the invoice numbers. “I’ve got it, and thank you so much. You’re a saint.”

“You’ll stop by and say hello the next time you’re in the area?”

“That’s a promise. Liz can’t wait to meet everyone in the home office, so I think we might need to squeeze it in after Argentina.”

“I’ll see what I can do.” A tapping sound filtered over the line, as if she were already adding a scheduling reminder to her never-ending list.

After ending the call, Ryan canceled the previous reservation he’d made for the Fosters. Now thanks to Valerie’s magic connections, Liz’s parents would have twice as nice a room plus a full breakfast buffet. All for the same price.

He quickly texted the change in plans to Angela, then forwarded sections of the confirmation e-mail from his phone.
